Two internationally renowned academics to be awarded Honorary Doctoral Degrees at Klaipeda University

On Monday, October 14, in Stasys Vaitekūnas Hall of Klaipeda University (KU), two internationally renowned distinguished academics – Prof. Habil. Dr. Boguslaw Buszewski (Poland) and Prof. Dr. Jean-Marc Ogier (France) – were awarded Honorary Doctoral Degrees. These are eminent personalities, whose contributions to science are appreciated in Europe and worldwide. These people have been cooperating with Klaipeda University for many years sharing their valuable knowledge, ideas, and innovations. During the solemn meeting of the Senate, the academics were presented with documents and stamps attesting to their status as Honorary Doctors of KU. Both of them were honored with academic regalia.

Prof. Habil. Dr. Boguslaw Buszewski was awarded the Honorary Doctorate of KU for his long-standing cooperation and contribution to the development of higher education. The resolution was adopted on May 16, 2024. The Honorary Doctorate of KU was conferred on Prof. Dr. Jean-Marc Ogier for his cooperation and significant academic activities in the field of computer science. The resolution was adopted on June 13, 2024.

“Klaipeda University has a long tradition of conferring the Honorary Doctorate to distinguished Lithuanian and foreign academics. This is not only a recognition – the honorary doctors of Klaipeda University are our ambassadors abroad,” says Prof. Dr. Vaidutis Laurėnas, the Chairman of the Senate of KU.

The ceremony started with an introduction of Prof. Habil. Dr. Boguslaw Buszewski, his biography, his merits, and his efforts that have contributed to the growth of KU. He was awarded the Honorary Doctor regalia of KU. The new Honorary Doctor received loud applause from the guests and words of appreciation from Prof. Dr. Artūras Razbadauskas, KU Rector.

“Thank you for your great work, efforts, and achievements in participating in prestigious international research projects. You have been leading high-level research teams across Europe for many years. You have been submitting the applications in the projects of Horizon Europe, the Innovation Agency, the Research Council of Lithuania, and collaborating with researchers in Lithuania and several foreign countries. You bring important health research into practice. Thanks to you, the work of Klaipėda University scientists is appreciated in the international arena”, congratulated Prof. Dr. A. Razbadauskas, the Rector of KU.

On receiving KU honorary doctoral regalia, Prof. Habil. Dr. Boguslaw Buszewski expressed his sincere gratitude and said that he was full of pride, gratitude, joy, and humility.  

“Receiving an honorary doctorate is a great honor for any scientist. It means more than an academic title, a lecture at a renowned conference, or a publication in a prestigious magazine. It is not just a framed diploma accompanied by many handshakes and congratulations,” said Prof. Habil. Dr. Boguslaw Buszewski.

Later in the Senate meeting, the second Honorary Doctor, Prof. Dr. Jean-Marc Ogier, was introduced, together with his achievements and merits. The academician was also awarded honorary doctoral regalia, and the guests as well as Prof. Dr. A. Razbadauskas, the Rector of KU, expressed their pride and gratitude.

“Thank you for your work representing the EU-CONEXUS Alliance. Thanks to your efforts in Brussels, we are seen, heard, and appreciated across Europe! As part of a consortium of 9 universities, we bring together the resources of available knowledge and expertise, research and innovation. This is how we build a united Europe that fosters sustainable coastal ecosystems”, said Prof. Dr. A. Razbadauskas, KU Rector, in his welcome speech.  

On receiving the honorary doctoral regalia from KU, Prof. Dr. Jean-Marc Ogier said: “For me personally, this is the first time in my life that I have had the honor of receiving this title. This makes the occasion even more special. It is a particular honor to receive this title from your wonderful university, Klaipėda University, which has a long-standing partnership with the University of La Rochelle. Thank you sincerely for the opportunity to join your family of professors.”   

The Honorary Doctorate of KU is conferred on Lithuanian and foreign academics as well as eminent public figures, who have contributed to the growth of KU. Currently, the list of honorary doctors of KU includes 29 scientists.  

Prior to the ceremony, the two distinguished academics were introduced to the University community and delivered public lectures. Prof. Dr. Jean-Marc Ogier gave a lecture on Artificial Intelligence: myths, opportunities, risks, and Prof. Habil. Dr. Boguslaw Buszewski gave a lecture on Searching of biomarkers for early cancer diagnosis and other lifestyle diseases. Everyone could gain valuable knowledge and listen to the lectures during the live streaming.  


About Prof. Habil. Dr. Boguslaw Buszewski, Honorary Doctor of KU

Prof. Habil. Dr. Boguslaw Buszewski is a distinguished Polish chemist. His career, spanning over 40 years, is marked by significant contributions to chemistry, environmental science, and biomedical research. The professor has published more than 600 papers in prestigious scientific journals. According to Stanford University, he is among the World’s Top 2% most cited scientists.

Boguslaw Buszewski is a pioneer in the creation and development of advanced separation methods, particularly in the field of chromatography and electromigration, who has also developed innovative stationary phases and nano-columns that are widely used in medical diagnostics and environmental analysis. His interdisciplinary work has contributed to the development of rapid microbiological assays and bioanalytical tools, with significant implications for cancer research and personalized medicine.

About Prof. Dr. Jean-Marc Ogier, Honorary Doctor of KU

Prof. Dr. Jean-Marc Ogier is a distinguished French academic in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence, with over 200 publications. He actively participates in various French and European research projects, in collaboration with both public institutions and private companies. Throughout his career, Mr. Ogier has been actively involved in the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) serving as chairman of various technical committees and representing France on the IAPR Governing Board. Professor’s contribution to the field of pattern recognition and leadership in academic innovation are of particular importance both in France and in the international scientific community.

Since 2016, the professor has been President of the University of La Rochelle. As a leader, the professor is focused on interdisciplinarity, personalized learning, and sustainability. Mr. Ogier is also Chairman of the Board of the EU-CONEXUS European Universities Alliance, which brings together 9 partner universities across Europe to promote innovation and collaboration on coastal sustainability. Both the University of La Rochelle and the University of Klaipėda are members of this alliance.
