The 6th Math Olympiad for Klaipeda University Cup

On Friday, November 22, Klaipeda University hosted the 6th Western Lithuania Math Olympiad for 5-10 grade pupils to win KU Cup. Teachers’ and students’ interest is growing year by year. This year 168 students and 55 teachers from 12 municipalities (Klaipėda and Palanga, Klaipėda District, Jurbarkas District, Kretinga District, Mažeikiai District, Plungė District, Skuodas District, Šilalė District, Šilutė District, Telšiai District, and Rietavas District) took part in the Olympiad. For the first time, the Olympiad was also attended by pupils in grades 9-10

The Math Olympiad organized by KU was open to pupils in grades 5-8 from general education schools in Western Lithuania. To qualify for the Olympiad at KU, schoolchildren had to pass a first stage at school and a second stage in the municipalities. This year, the best math students in grades 9-10 from schools in Western Lithuania were also invited.  

Teachers from KU Žemyna Gymnasium, Vaivorykštė Gymnasium (Gargždai), and Klaipėda Lyceum helped to organize the event and to prepare the mathematics problems for Klaipėda University professors. Two hours were allocated for solving the problems.

While the pupils were solving mathematics problems, the teachers attended a seminar and listened to presentations by mathematicians from the Lithuanian Mathematical Society. Habil. Dr. Rimas Norvaiša gave a presentation on the Essential Features of Mathematics Ignored by Textbook School Mathematics, and Habil. Dr. Alfredas Račkauskas gave a presentation on More Interesting Lessons in Statistics.

The winners of the fifth grade: 1st place and KU Cup – Jonas Katkevičius (Klaipėda Lyceum), teacher Snieguolė Stakvilionė; 2nd place – Justas Jaugelis, (Public Organization Franciscan Gymnasium), teacher Jolanta Petrauskienė; 3rd place – Domas Marozas (Pamarys Progymnasium in Šilutė), teacher Gaja Girčiuvienė.

The winners of the sixth grade: 1st place and KU Cup – Herkus Kovalenko (Klaipėda Lyceum), teachers Virginija Baronienė and Snieguolė Stakvilionė; 2nd place – Ąžuolas Višinskis (Vladas Jurgutis Progymnasium in Palanga), teacher Ingrida Šleinienė; 3rd place – Lukas Rudys (Baltija Primary School in Palanga), teacher Diana Kapica.

The winners of the seventh grade: 1st place and KU Cup – Martynas Leščiukaitis (Hermanas Zudermanas Gymnasium in Klaipėda), teacher Janina Stepušaitienė; 2nd place – Kiril Dmitrenko (Pajūrys Progymnasium in Klaipėda), teacher Ala Aksiuta; 3rd place - Motiejus Zaksas (Venta Progymnasium in Mažeikiai), teacher Regina Petraškienė.

The winners of the eighth grade: 1st place and KU Cup – Jonas Skierus (Klaipėda Lyceum), teacher Dovilija Jančiauskienė; 2nd place – Herkus Kiauda (Vladas Jurgutis Progymnasium in Palanga), teacher Ingrida Šleinienė; 3rd place – Armandas Frainas (Verdenė Progymnasium in Klaipėda), teacher Rasa Brazinskaitė.

The winners of the ninth grade: 1st place and KU Cup – Eduardas Knieta (Klaipėda Lyceum), teachers Dovilija Jančiauskienė and Veronika Jasinskienė; 2nd place – Skaistė Grubaitė (Vainutas Gymnasium in Šilutė District), teacher Algirdas Oželis; 3rd place – Irmantė Petrošiūtė (Simonas Gaudėšius Gymnasium in Šilutė), teacher Gražina Žemaitaitienė.

The winners of the tenth grade: 1st place and KU Cup – Bernardas Pauželis (Klaipėda Lyceum), teacher Rasa Karapetian; 2nd place – Dominykas Stankus (Saulė Gymnasium in Švėkšna), teacher Edita Starkutytė; 3rd place – Martynas Riekašius (Vaivorykštė Gymnasium in Gargždai), teacher Dalia Bendikienė.

KU and sponsor prizes awarded

The talented schoolchildren gathered at the Olympiad were greeted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aida Norvilienė, Vice-Rector for Studies at KU, Prof. Dr. Viktoras Senčilas, Dean of the Faculty of Marine Technologies and Natural Sciences at KU, Habil. Dr. Rimas Norvaiša, Professor of the Lithuanian Mathematical Society, Giedrius Žemaitis, Chairman of the Jury of the Olympiad, Algis Latakas, Director General at Klaipėda State Seaport Authority, Vadim Norožnij, Director at Omega 365 Lithuania, Simona Kutelienė, Head of HR and Business Support at KN Energies.

The prize-winning pupils and the teachers of pupils, who secured the first place, received not only prizes from the main organizer of the event, Klaipėda University, but also gifts from the sponsors, the Lithuanian Mathematical Society and Omega 365 Lithuania.

The special problem provided by Klaipėda State Seaport Authority was solved by and prizes were awarded to the 9th grade pupil Skaistė Grubaitė and her teacher Algirdas Oželis from Vainutas Gymnasium (Šilutė District).

 

Martynas Riekašius, the 10th grade pupil from Vaivorykštė Gymnasium (Gargždai), solved a special problem provided by Omega 365 Lithuania and won the prize.

 

Special prizes from KN Energies and KU were awarded to the teacher, who trained the pupils with the most prizes. This year’s prize was awarded to Dovilija Jančiauskienė from Klaipėda Lyceum.
